Brendan's Handbuilt Display

Hand-soldered multiplexed LED display

Brendan took Introduction to Computer Science with me in the fall of 2014. For one project, Brendan chose to design and build a display out of LEDs. In the process, he learned how to program for the Arduino platform in C/C++, how to solder a perforated breadboard, as well as how to multiplex signals in order to control a matrix of LEDs with relatively few Arduino pins. In essence, he ended up building both a display and the hardware driver (via Arduino) to display arbitrary images, patterns, and text. In the video below, he shows the display running Conway’s Game of Life and explains the multiplexing process.
